2N redundancy
2N redundancy means a data center installs two complete, independent systems, each capable of carrying the full load alone — effectively 100% duplication of UPS plants, generators, distribution paths, or cooling. If an entire A-side system fails, the B-side carries everything with no interruption. 2N (and 2N+1, which adds a spare within each side) is the hallmark of Tier IV fault-tolerant designs and is standard for financial exchanges, critical government workloads, and premium colocation halls. The trade-off is cost: 2N electrical infrastructure can add 30-50% to build cost versus N+1 and runs each side at under 50% utilization, hurting efficiency. Many operators compromise with 2N power distribution to the rack but N+1 mechanical plant.
