Data hall

A data hall is the raised-floor or slab room inside a data center building where server racks, network gear and cooling units are installed. It is distinct from the electrical yards, generator plant and office space around it. Operators quote capacity per hall as well as per building: a single hall can range from a few hundred square meters in an urban colocation site to well over 10,000 square meters on a hyperscale campus. Splitting a building into two or more halls lets an operator isolate fire, electrical and cooling zones from each other and phase fit-out independently, and lets a large tenant get physical separation between halls without leasing a separate building. Colocation lease terms usually quote available white space in racks or square meters per hall rather than per building, since that is the unit customers actually contract for.
