Delta T (ΔT)

Delta T is the temperature difference between the coolant or air entering and leaving IT equipment or a cooling coil, expressed in degrees. A higher delta T means each unit of air or liquid carries away more heat, so fewer fans or pumps are needed for the same load, which lowers cooling energy use. Air-cooled halls often work with a delta T of roughly 10 to 15 degrees Celsius across servers, while liquid-cooled loops can be designed for a wider range. A low delta T is a common sign of bypass airflow or poor containment, and it reduces chiller and free-cooling efficiency. Operators track it with supply and return temperature sensors in DCIM and use it to tune airflow, containment and setpoints before adding cooling capacity.
