Diesel Generator Set (Genset)
A diesel generator set, or genset, is an engine-driven generator that supplies backup power to a data center when the utility feed fails. Utility loss triggers an automatic transfer switch, and the UPS bridges the gap of typically 10–60 seconds while generators start and synchronize. Large facilities install units rated between roughly 2 and 3.5 MW each, arranged in N+1 or 2N configurations, with on-site fuel storage commonly sized for 24–48 hours of full-load runtime. Gensets are the main source of local air-quality permitting constraints, which is why operators increasingly evaluate HVO renewable diesel, gas engines and battery storage as complements. Regular load bank testing is required to keep them reliable.
