Energization
Energization is the moment a data center is first connected to live utility power through its substation and switchgear. It is the milestone developers quote when they give a delivery date. It comes before commissioning and ready-for-service: after energization, generators, UPS and cooling still have to be tested under load before any tenant can deploy servers. For large campuses the date is usually set by the utility, not by construction; transmission upgrades can take three to seven years in congested markets such as Northern Virginia or Dublin. Announcements like "energization expected in Q1 2028" therefore describe when power arrives, and rack availability typically follows several months later. Comparing energization dates across projects is more informative than comparing groundbreaking dates, because grid access is the scarcest input.
