Micro data center — Data Center Glossary

A micro data center is a self-contained, factory-integrated unit — often a single enclosure or container — that packages racks, UPS, cooling, fire suppression, security, and monitoring into a footprint of roughly 1-10 racks and 5-100 kW. Deployed in office buildings, factories, retail stores, telecom sheds, or outdoor sites, micro data centers bring IT capacity to locations that lack purpose-built facilities. They are the standard building block for edge computing rollouts because they can be shipped, installed in days, and managed remotely at scale. Vendors include Schneider Electric, Vertiv, and Rittal, with ruggedized versions rated for harsh temperatures and dust. Compared with a server closet, a micro data center provides data-center-grade power protection, cooling, and physical security in standardized, repeatable form.
