Stranded power

Stranded power is electrical capacity that exists but cannot be productively used or monetized — a growing theme on both sides of the data center market. On the grid side, it refers to generation or interconnection capacity in locations lacking data center demand or transmission, such as remote renewables or flared gas; operators like Crusoe built their model on siting compute at such stranded energy. Inside facilities, power becomes stranded when contracted capacity cannot be filled: a hall designed for 10 kW per rack may exhaust floor space or cooling before using its power allocation, or tenants may reserve megawatts they never draw. With grid connections now the scarcest asset in the industry — utility queues run years — identifying and unlocking stranded power has become a core development strategy and a driver of acquisitions of powered sites.
