South Korea broke ground on its National AI Computing Center on August 3, 2026 at Solasido Data Center Park in Haenam, Jeollanam-do, roughly 400 km south of Seoul. The project is run by KOACC (Korea AI Computing Center Co.), a special-purpose company funded through the Financial Services Commission's National Growth Fund, with a consortium led by Samsung SDS as main contractor and operator alongside Naver Cloud, Samsung Electronics, Samsung C&T, KT and Kakao. Total project cost is put at roughly ₩2.4 trillion (about $1.7B), covering a 48,996 sqm site and a 16,978 sqm, two-story building. Power capacity starts at 40 MW and is designed to expand to 80 MW by 2030, supporting an initial 15,000 AI accelerators available by the targeted 2028 completion, scaling to 50,000 by 2030. The center is positioned as the flagship of the government's 'AI 3 Great Powers' mega-project push (alongside semiconductors and robotics), providing subsidized compute access to startups, SMEs, universities and research institutes rather than hyperscale commercial cloud customers.
