Digital twin (data center)
A digital twin is a continuously updated, real-time virtual replica of a data center's physical infrastructure — racks, power circuits, cooling systems, and floor layout — built from CAD/BIM design models and live sensor feeds pulled from DCIM and building-management systems. Unlike a static DCIM dashboard, a digital twin lets operators simulate "what-if" scenarios, such as adding high-density AI racks or testing cooling failover, before touching physical equipment. Vendors including Nvidia (Omniverse), Cadence, and DCIM providers such as Sunbird have pushed the concept from design-phase visualization toward live operational control, particularly for AI facilities where density and thermal margins leave little room for error. Adoption is concentrated among hyperscalers and large colocation operators managing multi-site, high-density fleets.
