Tier Certification (Uptime Institute)

Tier Certification is Uptime Institute's formal, third-party verification process confirming that a data center's design and/or built facility meets the infrastructure and redundancy requirements of a specific Tier level (I-IV) under its Tier Standard, distinct from an operator simply marketing a facility as 'Tier III-equivalent,' which carries no third-party validation. The process runs in two stages: Tier Certification of Design Documents (TCDD) reviews electrical and mechanical diagrams and a written design narrative before construction begins, while Tier Certification of Constructed Facility (TCCF) follows once the building is energized and includes live demonstrations of systems under real-world conditions; TCDD is a prerequisite for TCCF. Uptime Institute has issued more than 4,300 certification awards across 120+ countries since introducing the Tier Classification System in the 1990s, making it the industry's most widely recognized third-party validation of resiliency claims.
