Topping Out
Topping out is the construction milestone when the final structural element of a building, usually the highest beam or roof slab, is placed. In data center projects it signals that the shell is complete and work shifts to mechanical and electrical fit-out, data hall readiness, and commissioning. Operators often announce it publicly as proof of schedule, as SM+ did for its Jakarta SMX01 site in May 2026. Topping out typically precedes ready-for-service by 6 to 12 months for a single building, though energization by the utility can delay delivery. A topped-out shell is not yet capacity: power, cooling, and testing still have to be completed. Analysts treat it as a firmer indicator than a groundbreaking announcement but weaker than a signed energization date or a first customer handover.
