Waste Heat Reuse
Waste heat reuse is the practice of capturing the low-grade heat rejected by a data center's cooling systems and routing it to a productive use — typically a district heating network, greenhouse, or industrial process — instead of releasing it to outside air via cooling towers or dry coolers. The EU's recast Energy Efficiency Directive, in force since 2023, requires data centers above 1 MW of IT load operating in the bloc to publicly report their waste heat reuse potential, pushing operators toward liquid cooling designs that produce higher-grade, more easily recoverable heat than air cooling. The Nordics lead adoption: Stockholm Exergi's Stockholm Data Parks initiative pipes heat from local data centers into the city's district heating grid, and similar schemes operate in Helsinki, Odense, and Dublin. Reuse economics depend heavily on proximity to a heat off-taker, since hot water loses value quickly over distance.
