Google broke ground on its first Malaysian data center at Elmina Business Park in Shah Alam, Selangor, on 2 October 2024, backed by a US$2 billion investment the company projects will generate over US$3.2 billion in economic impact by 2030 and support roughly 26,500 jobs. The site is being built by Sime Darby Property and leased to Google, marking Malaysia's entry into Google's global data center and Cloud region footprint alongside more than a dozen other countries. The facility uses a water-cooling system Google says consumes about 10% less energy and produces about 10% less carbon emissions than equivalent air-cooling, feeding local ambitions around energy-efficient AI infrastructure. As of an August 2026 update from Google Asia Pacific's infrastructure team, construction was described as progressing well with local community and government cooperation, and the site was expected to reach operational readiness within roughly nine months. Once live, the data center will host Google Search, Maps and Workspace traffic alongside the new Google Cloud region, giving Malaysian enterprises, startups and public-sector users lower-latency access to Google Cloud and AI services without routing to Singapore or other regional hubs.
