Covilhã hosts one of the Iberian Peninsula's largest data center campuses, built by the entity long registered as Portugal Telecom Data Center S.A. and operated today under the MEO/Altice Portugal brand. The site was chosen partly for the region's cool climate and low natural-disaster risk, and opened in 2013 with an expansion following in 2018. The campus covers about 75,500 sqm, with roughly 12,000 sqm split across 24 IT and data halls, and currently runs 6.8 MW of installed IT power — a figure Altice's buyer, Asterion Industrial Partners, says can scale to 75 MW within the existing campus and as high as 175 MW on adjacent land where power has already been secured. MEO markets it as commercial colocation, with more than 50,000 servers hosted on-site, an air free-cooling design, a PUE around 1.25, and connectivity including two dedicated fiber links direct to Brazil. Uptime Institute has certified the facility to Tier III for both design and constructed facility. In December 2025 Asterion Industrial Partners agreed to acquire the campus from Altice Portugal for €120 million, a deal expected to close around Q1 2026 as the fund's entry into the Portuguese market.
