Chapelcross, on the Solway coast near Annan, hosted a Cold War RAF station and later a nuclear power station that closed in 2004; CX Tech now proposes turning the brownfield land to its north into one of the largest data centre campuses in the UK. The company describes a 55-hectare site with eight data centre buildings totalling up to 162,000 sqm and roughly 1 GW of potential capacity, plus an on-site substation, industrial space and a training centre. Published design targets include closed-loop, non-evaporative air cooling with a PUE of 1.30 or better, and low water use. The site already has 132 kV electrical infrastructure, and SP Energy Networks completed a refurbishment of the Gretna–Chapelcross line in August 2026; the developer is also exploring private-wire links to nearby wind, solar and biomass generation. The investment is quoted at £16.5 billion, with an eight-year phased build that could start in 2027 if consent is granted. As of October 2026 only planning permission in principle has been filed and an environmental impact assessment is underway, so no tenants, power contracts or delivery dates are confirmed.
