AWS Project Rainier (New Carlisle)

Project Rainier is AWS's data center campus in New Carlisle, St. Joseph County, Indiana, first announced by the state in April 2024 as an $11 billion investment and the largest capital investment announcement in Indiana history at the time. AWS's own account, published when the cluster came online, describes it as "70% larger than any other AI computing platform in AWS history," running nearly half a million Trainium2 chips (with AWS targeting over a million by the end of the year, including inference workloads), interconnected via NeuronLink and Elastic Fabric Adapter networking across multiple buildings on the site. The campus is dedicated to a single named customer, Anthropic, which uses it to train and serve its Claude models — AWS states it delivers more than five times the compute power Anthropic used to train its previous models. No exact power-capacity figure or building count has been published by AWS itself; those numbers circulate only in secondary trade-press coverage. Indiana's incentive package for the project includes sales-tax exemptions, workforce training grants and infrastructure contributions tied to performance milestones.
