Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC)
A solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is an electrochemical device that converts a fuel — natural gas, biogas or increasingly hydrogen — directly into electricity through a chemical reaction rather than combustion, with no moving parts and none of the exhaust profile of a diesel generator. Operating at high temperatures of roughly 600-1,000°C, SOFCs reach electrical efficiency around 55-65%, well above a conventional combustion turbine's 35-40%, and can pair with waste-heat capture to push combined efficiency higher still. Data center operators have started piloting on-site SOFC generation as a hedge against slow grid interconnection queues and as a lower-emissions alternative to diesel backup; announced pilots include Microsoft's natural-gas SOFC trials in the US and DayOne's hydrogen-fed SOFC pilot at its SG1 campus in Singapore, positioned as the market's first such deployment. As of 2026, hydrogen-fed SOFC projects remain mostly proof-of-concept scale — tens of kW to low single-digit MW — rather than primary power for an entire facility.
