Hurricane Electric is better known as one of the world's largest IPv4/IPv6 backbone networks, but the company also owns and operates two purpose-built colocation buildings in Fremont, California, rather than reselling space in someone else's facility. FMT2, the larger of the pair at 200,000 sq ft, is built around diverse A and B utility feeds with fully separate PDUs, panels, transformers and generators plus UPS backup, and can host up to 3,000 cabinets across its raised-floor halls. Its main draw for network operators is connectivity rather than raw power density: the building hosts 13 internet exchange points, including the San Francisco Metropolitan Internet Exchange (SFMIX) and the Fremont Cabal Internet Exchange (FCIX), reaching roughly 295 networks over eight diverse fiber carriers. That density of peering makes FMT2 a common secondary or tertiary interconnection site for networks already established at Equinix, CoreSite or Digital Realty buildings elsewhere in Silicon Valley, rather than a primary enterprise colocation destination.

  • 200,000 sq ft purpose-built, own-operated Hurricane Electric building
  • Up to 3,000 cabinets
  • 13 internet exchange points, incl. SFMIX and FCIX
  • ~295 networks reachable via 8 diverse fiber carriers
