</a>Colossus is xAI's flagship AI training supercomputer, built at a former Electrolux manufacturing plant in the Whitehaven area of Memphis, Tennessee. NVIDIA's own newsroom, quoting xAI, states the system was built "in just 122 days" and started training within 19 days of the first rack rolling onto the floor, running an initial 100,000 NVIDIA Hopper GPUs that xAI has described doubling to a combined 200,000. Phase I reached full operational capability on 1 May 2025, drawing 150 MW of grid power from MLGW and TVA through a newly built substation (#63), backed by 150 MW of Tesla Megapack battery storage for backup; a second substation was planned to bring further capacity online in the following months. The 785,000 sq ft, 217-acre property was sold in May 2026 by an affiliate of Phoenix Investors to a subsidiary of SpaceX for $185 million, with the sale documentation naming the site "Colossus I" — xAI continues to operate the facility as the compute cluster training its Grok models.
