M&O Stamp of Approval (Uptime Institute)

The M&O Stamp of Approval is Uptime Institute's certification of a data center's operational practices — staffing levels, training, maintenance procedures, and preventive-maintenance planning — rather than its physical design or built infrastructure, which Tier Certification covers instead. Introduced in 2011, it evaluates a facility's management and operations program against Uptime's own research linking a majority of unplanned outages to human error and process gaps rather than equipment failure. Certification runs on a two-year validity cycle, after which an operator must be reassessed to keep the Stamp current. Because Tier Certification proves a facility was designed and built to a given redundancy standard while the M&O Stamp proves it is being run well day to day, some colocation and hyperscale operators pursue both awards together to demonstrate that on-paper resiliency is matched by operational discipline on the floor.
